The YIMBY Brunch

All Aboard The Allen Gardiner

Enjoy the Brunch, the River, Meeting Friends Old and New

Allen Gardiner

Thurs, 17th August, from 9.30am-11am (£15pp)

About the Allen Gardiner

Built in 1942 by the Miami Shipbuilding Corporation at Miami in Florida USA, the Allen Gardiner is one of twenty identical boats ordered by the South African Air Force during World War II. These boats were used as air/sea rescue launches and became commonly known as “crash boats”. They were deployed in pairs around the South African coast, and they were responsible for saving the lives of over 600 survivors from the 153 ships sunk by German U-boats and surface craft off that coast during the war.

After the War, a number of the surviving boats became harbour cruise restaurants, including the Allen Gardiner. She was added to the Lady Florence business in Durban, South Africa in October 2002. In 2011, she underwent a six-month rebuild in Durban, with all planking above the waterline being replaced. At the end of 2013, she proudly made her way to Ipswich and into our hearts. Visit the Allen Gardiner site to find out more.

Bookings close 10th August

Equally as important, this meeting is to introduce you to a project called GrandMentoring, an innovative initiative to harness the energy, skills and experience of older volunteers (50+) to support young people in our area to find work, stay on in education or take up training.

vm log500

Originally the brainchild of Lord and Lady Freud, it has been running in London since 2009. And now, Yes In My Backyard! In central Ipswich alone, there are more than 400 young people in care.

Any person aged 50+ who wants to give back to the community, give a young person a chance and can spare about an hour a week (or equivalent) would make a huge difference. You may not fit the bill yourself, but you may know someone who does.

And there are benefits for businesses as well as for those being mentored, not least of which is increasing employability skills.

DIRECTIONS FROM NOVOTEL / STOKE BRIDGE
Novotel is at the junction of Grey Friars Road, Star Lane and College Street. Stoke Bridge is the road bridge over the River Orwell/Gipping at the junction of Burrell Road (from the Station), Dock Street and Vernon Road (A137 from Manningtree).

Approaching Stoke Bridge from the Novotel roundabout on Bridge Street, take the first exit at the next roundabout almost immediately. Then again immediately, turn left before the pedestrian traffic lights and the bridge itself. The end of the Wet Dock is immediately ahead of you. There is a large building at the end of the road Jerwood Dance House.

The road directly ahead is pedestrian only, so you must bear right. This is the East Cut. There is usually a blue gate half across the road ahead of you saying “Welcome to Ipswich Haven Marina”.  Pass this gate and enter ABP ports.

Dead ahead are gates with wire mesh fencing across the road. These are usually locked and lead to a private part of the Port. Bear left before these gates. (There is only one way you can go once you leave the roundabout). On your left is a large gravel car park. Park in this car park. This is before the marina office.

Please note that you will need an Ipswich Haven Marina car parking permit. A Member of crew will meet you in the car park with a parking permit that must be displayed in your car. Parking is free and under surveillance.
